Family recipes will be a big part of the bakery, Jones said. The business will offer four variations of vegan pound cake: red velvet, lemon, chocolate turtle and strawberry crunch. Estella’s Vegan Dessert Boutique will also serve sweet potato pie, pecan pie and peach cobbler. Other items will be on a seasonal rotation, Jones said, and changes will be made to the menu monthly.
“I’ve been working really, really hard for a while to pull all of this together,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity for people to come out and try the desserts.”
The 700-square-foot space, previously home to a bookstore, offers seating for six guests. The $11,000 Jones has put into the venture all came from grants and pitch competitions, such as the TechTown Detroit Retail Bootcamp and the Detroit Rebrand Black Pitch Competition.
“I’m doing this 100-percent on my own,” said Jones, who in addition to herself will have two other employees. The bakery will operate noon-6 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The limited hours, Jones said, are to give her work/life balance, as she’s a married mother of four.
